AiR Småland film: animation – local artist in residence
The application to AiR Småland is now open for animators – visual storytellers using animation as a medium. The AiR Småland film residency will take place in spring 2025 in collaboration with Sörängens folkhögskola during the period March to May. The application deadline is November 25, 2024.
Application
Applicants for the residency period March–May 2025 should be educated and/or established in animation, with a strong connection to Jönköping County.
Please submit your application as one (1) PDF. Your application should include:
• A resume with information about 3–5 relevant works, including a link to your website
• A description of your artistic practice
• A proposal of what you intend to work on during the residency. (approximately 300 words)
The application deadline is November 25, 2024. Notification of selection will be sent out in mid-December.

Practical information
The residency lasts for 3 calendar months, from March to May 2025.
Simultaneously with the call for a local artist, a call will be issued for a visiting artist in residence from the rest of Sweden, the Nordic countries, and internationally. The selection of artists is made in consultation with the reference group from Region Jönköping County, Sörängens folkhögskola, and our external reference Niki Lindroth von Bahr (Extern länk).
The grant is awarded as follows:
A grant of 60,000 SEK in total is paid for the entire period, and Region Jönköping County also covers travel within the county during the residency. Additionally, Region Jönköping County provides shared accommodation in Nässjö, where the two residents have separate rooms, shared common areas, and a studio/workspace at Sörängens folkhögskola for the entire period.
The following are included in collaboration with Sörängens folkhögskola:
• Hosting both artists in residence throughout their stay.
• Sörängens folkhögskola will serve as the point of contact to welcome and introduce the recipients on site, as well as invite them to joint meetings and discussions.
• Offers participation in the school’s activities such as lectures, seminars, trips, etc.
• Provides each recipient with a workstation, including a computer equipped with software for digital animation, image processing, and editing. Offers access to: stations for direct animation, a sound studio, and a studio for drawing, painting, and sculpture.
• Plans and organizes, in collaboration with the residents, at least one public event, workshop, talk, or seminar during the residency, as well as documentation of the residency period.
As a local artist in residence, we expect you to
• Participate in at least one public event, in consultation with the visiting artist in resident and Sörängens folkhögskola, during the residency period.
• Meet other animators connected to the visiting resident and Sörängens folkhögskola during the residency period.
• Write a short text about your experience (maximum two A4 pages).
• Agree that we may use your work in our communication about the project.
• Allow yourself to be photographed and potentially appear in film for the documentation and marketing of AiR Småland.
• The recipients are required to spend at least 3/4 of the time on-site during the residency period.
The local artist in residence is responsible for:
• Personal insurance
• Materials needed for the residency
• Living expenses not covered by the grant
Selection
In selecting the local artist, we make an overall assessment based on how the applicant justifies their thoughts on the residency in relation to their artistic practice. We will also consider accessibility and strive for geographical diversity within the county.
About AiR Småland
AiR Småland is a new residency program run by Region Jönköping County, with support from the Swedish Arts Council. The purpose of AiR Småland is to support the community for independent arts, cultural operators and institutions of Jönköping County, while the county’s cultural life is stimulated by the exchange with visiting artists from across Sweden and the world.
